Thessaloniki (Thessalonica) is the second city of Greece. The city enjoys the distinction of being one of the oldest cities in Europe and benefits from a sea-front setting. The city was founded in 315 BC and named after the sister of Alexander the Great. Since then the history of the city has been inextricably linked with that of some of the most important powers of European history. In amongst the pavement cafes, shops and tavernas of this very modern city you will find indelible reminders of the cities ancient Greek, Roman, Early Christian and Byzantine past. Plenty of Byzantine churches pay homage to the fact that St Paul preached the gospel here.
As you would expect of a major city, Thessaloniki has plenty to offer in terms of museums including an archaeological museum, and there is plenty of nightlife including the bouzoukia (Greek live music) and of course an array of bars and tavernas.
