Serres prefecture offers the visitor peaceful pursuits. There is fishing in Lake Kerkini and in the Strimon and Kroussovitis rivers, mountain climbing at Vrontos and winter skiing at the Lai-Lia ski resort. How about exporing the enchanting limestone caves at Alistrati (near the principal town Serres), or relaxing in the spa at, the aptly named, Therma.

An interesting cultural insight can be gained by making the trip to Siderokastro. This town is near the Bulgarian border and has been fought over more times than I care to mention. It is set amongst woodlands, on the banks of the river Kroussovitis, and it houses the Siderokastro Folk Art Museum.
