The prefecture of Pieria is characterised by the great beaches, along the Thermaic coast backed, inland, by the verdant Pierian plain with mount Olympos majestic in the background. This is the land of the gods where the ancients worshipped Zeus (Dias). The most impressive monument is at Dion, set before the great mountain. Here the ancient city lies upon the plain, the once thriving community with its two theatres, stadium and temple lies in melancholy ruins.

More recent, and homely, history can be experienced in the Folklore Museum in Katerini. Here the rich traditions of the Pontic people are preserved for future generations.
