The mythical story says that Lasithi prefecture was the birthplace of Zeus, king of the gods of Olympus and this land, with its majestic mountains, dazzling blue sea and stately churches really is a land fit for a king.

There were important early settlements in this area and remains from the excavations can be seen in Archaeological Museums in Sitia and Agios Nikolaos. More recent peoples such as the Byzantines and Venetians have also left their mark, especially in the wonderful churches and monasteries that adorn this part of Crete.
