The main town Larissa is a modern, functional town, set in an uninspiring flat plain. The area of principal interest in the prefecture is further north in the Tempe Valley. The swift waters of the river Pineios rush through the Tempe, which is cleaved between the slopes of Mts Olympos and Ossa. Of special interest is the historical settlement of Ambelakia. Here you will find traditional mansions including one which, resplendent with wood-carving and stained glass, is open to the public. there are also fine examples of orthodox churches.
