Holiday accommodation in Lakonia
The prefecture of Lakonia is at the south-east tip of the Peloponnese. One of the best known sites is the Byzantine citadel at Monemvassia. The site is a natural as well as a historical wonder. Built on the seaboard side of a massive rock, the ruins of this fortified town are well worth a visit. Further inland, lies the ancient town on Sparta, famous for the warrior race that lived here. Not much remains of the ancient town but the site of the great mountain nearby might make you shudder when you remember that it was from these brutal heights that imperfect Spartan babies were thrown to their deaths. A splendid array of ruins can be seen at Mystras. The town is only inhabited now by nuns.

The Mani penisular is where you can find tall fortified houses, many of them still inhabited.

The Diros caves are a limestone underground riddle. Visitors are taken on small boats through the, stalactite adorned, maze of tunnels - just be sure to duck your head when instructed!!

The tiny island of Elefonisos, off the southerly tip of Lakonia, has some of the best beaches in Greece. There is a wide stretch of gently sloping golden sand. This island is well off the package tourist trail and so car hire is an essential. If you want a great beach and sleepy Greek island life this is the place for you.

There are flights to Kalamata from the UK during the summer months.
