In the west of Kilkis the land is thrust up into rugged mountains. Clear mountain streams feed this wild land and the lower slopes are clothed in thick swathes of woodland and here and there mountain villages, such as Kastaneri, preserve a rustic way of life. In the north of the prefecture the drama of the mountains gives way to the sparkling waters of Lake Doirani. People come here to swim from its sandy shore, for fishing, or to savour the freshly caught fish at a water-front taverna.

The town of Kilkis is where you can find the Kilkis Archaeological Museum and the Kilkis war Museum. The hill that broods over the town hides within it a cave containing a wealth of stalagmites and stalagmites.
