Holiday accommodation in Kavala
The prefecture of Kavala is in north-eastern Greece in the region of Thraki (Thrace). It was tradtionally a tobacco growing region and this endeavour can still be seen in the villages of Krinides and Philippi. Phillipi has an ancient history and Roman and early Christian remains serve as stone reminders of the lives of our ancestors.

The principal town, Kavala, crowds around a port on the foothills of Mount Simvolo and above the town a 16th century castle stands guard. In these, more peaceful times, one can wander up to the castle and enjoy the sweeping views over the town, the port and the sea beyond. The town has varied architecture and two notable Turkish structures are Mehmet Ali's house and the Imaret. Byzantine walls, that once protected the city, remain in parts and relics from the area's many inhabitants and eras are on show at the archaeological museum. Kavala was known in ancient times as Neapolis and it was here that St Paul took his first step on European soil.

The nearby seaside villages of Kalamitsa and Nea Iraklitsa, among others, offer friendly seafront tavernas and beaches.
