Ioannina is the main town of this mountainous region. It sits above the Pamvotis lake, a still clear expanse of water broken only by the large island just off the coast. Towering above the lake, with its stately minarets, is the former mosque. This building now houses the Municipal Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the towns Greek, Jewish and Muslim populations. The mosque itself is also well preserved internally and allows non-Muslims a chance to view the intricate scripts that decorate in the inside of this sort of religious building. Below there is a pleasant promenade along the edge of the lake. The town is known for its metal working and many fine examples of silver and gold jewellery are available. Restaurants and bars abound in this lively and refined town.

Along the mountain pass, between the Pindos mountains lies the delightful alpine style village of Metsovo. This is considered one of the most unique villages in Greece. The dramatic mountain scenery and steeply sloping roofs may remind you of Switzerland but the local crafts and foods are all Greek. There are ski resorts and hiking nearby.
