The prefecture of Elia is a sparsley populated agricultural land. The best known place in Elia is Olympia, home of the ancient Olympic Games. Legend has it that the games were started by Hercules, but whatever the history, the games continued for one thousand years. The green hills of Olympia are a wonderful setting for these ancient ruins. There is plenty to see: an indoor museum, the temple of Zeus, and, of course, the stadium.

Less well known are the wonderful sandy beaches that line the coast. These are the best place to enjoy the sun whilst eating a locally grown ripe watermelon.

Car hire is an advantage in this area, there are also many organised tours to Olympia from Athens and Zakynthos.
