In Attika the remains of Classical Greece surround the ancient capital Athens, known for the Acropolis and its splendid Parthenon. On the southern tip of the penisular, at Sounion, the temple of Poseidon stares out across the sea. Much of the surrounding countryside is covered by olive trees and vineyards.

In Brauron the delicate columned temple of Artemis lies amongst vineyards and to the north is the imposing 11th century Dafni monastery with its gold mosaic interior.

The western coastline along Glyfada and Vouliagmeni offers beaches and swimming areas surrounded by fashionable bars and upmarket restaurants. The beaches on the East coast from Rafina to Marathon are often quieter. Ferries leave from Rafina to the islands and seafront tavernas serve freshly caught fish.
