Further south the coastal wetlands thrill to the sounds of rare wild birds and fishing villages line the sheltered Amvrakicos Gulf.

The main town of Arta stands on the banks of the river Arakhthos and has a rich historical legacy. The town is surrounded by orange and lemon groves, heavenly fragrant in the spring, and around the town 13th and 14th Byzantine churches and monasteries stand testament to the historical importance of this area.
