Arcadia is the place where one can almost recapture that Byronic dream which is forever associated with the name of this legendary pastoral idyll. A wild land of fir clothed majestic mountains and deep gorges, this is a land of remote villages and breathtaking scenery. For those who like hiking in an unspoilt wilderness hearing nothing but bird song and the tinkle of bells, as a shepherd drives his flock in the time honoured way, Arcadia is one of the few remaining wild places of Europe.

The villages of Demitsana and Vtina are extremely picturesque but my favourite is Lagadia where the traditional houses cling to the upper slopes of a deep gorge. Many of the tavernas in the Arcadian villages serve locally grown foods.

At Easter the villages come to life with a celebration of roasting lamb, wine and dancing which often spills out onto the street. The meadows are full of wild flowers at this time.

Around the 15th of August, Panagyri is celebrated. The villagers all get together for a feast of spit roasted pork and lively music and dancing.
