In the 19th century a nun had a series of visions of the Virgin Mary, who told her that a holy icon would be found. Just a year later, a precious pre-Byzantine icon (possibly the work of St Luke) was found on the site of a Byzantine church. Since then, the icon has been associated with many miracles and the island is considered holy and a place of pilgrimage to devotees of the Holy Virgin. The main town is overlooked by the imposing Church of Our Lady (one of 700 churches on the island).
