Holiday accommodation in Rodopi
The prefecture of Rodopi is in north-eastern Greece in the region of Thraki (Thrace), close to the Bulgarian and Turkish borders. The area is agricultural with fruit, tobacco and cotton being a few of the most common crops. Turkish architecture, such as minarets beside churches, stand testiment to the area's turbulent history. The prefecture capital is Komotini and its origins are early Christian with, later, strong Byzantine elements. Here you may view the colourful Folk Art Museum or the Archaeological museum. Further archaeological remains can be discovered in Ancient Maroneia, a 7th century BC settlement. The site includes mosaics, a theater, a sanctuary to Dionysus and city walls. Lake Viotonis forms part of the border with Xanthi prefecture and in the winter the lake is home to a quarter of a million birds. To the south, seaside fishing villages and beaches lie on the coast line offering bathing and friendly tavernas.
