Paralympic
Games in Athens 2004
The forthcoming Paralympic Games will be held in Athens from 17 - 28 of September 2004. This major event should attract 4000 competitors from 130 countries and the athletes will be housed in the Paralympic Olympic village.
The Olympic village is being built to house 17,000 athletes and officials during the Olympic Games and 6000 during the Paralympic Games. A huge construction project is underway at Acharnes, on the northern boundaries of Athens. Efforts are being made to ensure that the facilities are fully accessible. The development is divided into a residential zone and an international zone and the international zone will include the Olympic museum and the press center.
The events will take place at the Olympic venues and the sports will include: archery, athletics, cycling, football, goalball, judo, power lifting, wheelchair rugby, boccia, sailing, shooting, swimming, wheelchair tennis, table tennis, volleyball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing and equestrian events.
Accessibility is being improved in the city of Athens, which should provide a much-needed legacy to Athenians with mobility problems.
