The prefecture of Fthiotida in Central Greece invites the adventurous traveller. The terrain ranges from seaside villages and beaches to the wooded slopes of Mount Oiti. In the summer mountain climbing is the pursuit of the brave and in the winter it is skiing. The more sedate traveller may view the Frankish castle or the archaeological museum in Lamia, or the catacombs in Atalanti and then finish the day sampling the local specialies of almond cookies or myzithra cheese by one of the many thermal springs.
