The prefecture of Florina in is the wild far north-west of Greece where dramatic mountains and serene lakes form the border with Albania and the former Yugoslavia. The lakes Mikri and Megali (little and big) Prespa, are 850 metres above sea level. The glass-like serenity of Mikri Prespa is interupted by the rocky shores of the islet of Agios Ahilios. This mysterious islet held both the ancients and the Byzantine peoples in thrall and it was in this revered place that they chose to pay homage to the saints by painting frescoes in the caves, enshrining them to the Christian faith.

Back on shore, on the banks of Megali Prespa, in the village of Psarades, there is a Byzantine church. Within the cool interior the walls are adorned by solemn frescoes.

Naturally, the wild environment is a playground for species of birds and animals.

In the winter time, the high altitude means that the weather is cold and snow often falls on the high peaks of the mountains. Winter sports are practised on Mount Vitsi and the Vigla ski resort is located close to the village of Pissoderi.
