The Ionian Islands lie off the west coast of mainland Greece and stretch all the way south past the Peleponnese or the southern part of the Greek mainland.   The largest is Cephalonia or Kefalonia, which is a very green island.  The film 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' was made there, and featured some of the best views on the island.  In common with many other Greek places, the names of the  islands appear in many different variations. 

Corfu has long been a popular package tour destination from the UK and Europe.  The other islands are less well known and unspoilt.
